Amigurumi Crochet Patterns for Beginners

Amigurumi crochet patterns are becoming a popular trend for seasoned crafters and novices alike. Amigurumi is a Japanese-style art form of creating small animals and other stuffed creatures through crocheting or knitting. The name of the craft, Amigurumi, is a combination of two Japanese words. First “ami”, which translates to “crocheting” or “knitting”, then “nuigurumi”, which is the Japanese word for a stuffed toy, such as a doll. The most popular amigurumi are stuffed animals, but some crafters also choose to create stuffed toys that look like inanimate objects that have come to life. Many characters from popular anime or video games have been transformed into amigurumi dolls. There is also a trend to create dolls of popular television actors in Amigurumi style, with exaggerated features. They have sold online and in stores for high prices.

Amigurumi crochet patterns usually call for the stuffed toys to have a larger heads with disproportionately smaller bodies. The heads are exaggerated, because the faces of the stuffed toys are the selling point for these items. Amigurumi toys have taken over online craft stores like Etsy. Etsy is a craft store for small businesses, often individuals, who showcase their crochet work and sell unique pieces to buyers. Amigurumi are suitable for children, but because of their fun and eccentric aesthetic values, they are also enjoyed by many adults. The aesthetic of amigurumi dolls are often compared to “little monsters”, because the heads are so much larger than the appendages. However, the dolls are still considered to be cute, and they are not meant to be scary.

There are many resources online for free amigurumi crochet patterns. Many enthusiasts write patterns and share them on online forums. There are also books with instructions for various types of animals in the amigurumi style of crocheting. Amigurumi are crocheted from yarn using the single crochet stitch, also known as the double crochet for crafters from the UK. Typically, patterns call for different sized crochet hooks or knitting needles than most crafters use. The needles need to be slightly smaller because the gauge needs to be tight so the stuffing does not fall out or show through the fabric. Unlike traditional crochet, in amigurumi the stitch tension has to be tight to prevent “holes” forming, as holes will expand after stuffing.

The amigurumi doll is stuffed with standard polyester or cotton, but crafters can use whatever material they see fit. Sometimes, crafters will insert plastic pallets into the body of the doll in order to keep the bottom of it weighed down. The doll is usually assembled in sections and parts and then brought together once all the pieces are complete, the amigurumi crochet patterns will show you have to put the pieces together. Crochet amigurumi is usually made in spiral rounds, so that the pattern doesn’t look striped.

An Amigurumi doll can be crocheted by following amigurumi crochet patterns but following a pattern doesn’t always mean your finished doll will look exactly like the pattern. Be careful to choose the right sized yarn for your pattern. If you choose a larger type of yarn, your doll will be larger, and you will have to be sure to create very tight stitches.

Many crafters with all levels of experience are enjoying the fun of amigurumi. With a little practice, you will be creating your own creatures in no time.
